# Get channel

> Returns metadata for a public YouTube channel: name, handle, description, avatar, banner, and subscriber/video counts. Subscriber and video counts are the rounded values YouTube itself displays — YouTube stopped publishing exact subscriber counts platform-wide in 2019.

## What it does

Returns metadata for a public YouTube channel: name, handle, description, avatar, banner, and subscriber/video counts. Subscriber and video counts are the rounded values YouTube itself displays — YouTube stopped publishing exact subscriber counts platform-wide in 2019.

## Tool details

| Field | Value |
| - | - |
| Tool name | `youtube_get_channel` |
| Platform | YouTube |
| REST endpoint | `GET /v1/youtube/channels/{channel}` |
| Result type | Detail tool |

## Parameters

| Parameter | Type | Required | Description |
| - | - | - | - |
| `channel` | `string` | Yes | Channel handle, with or without the `@` — the name in a channel URL. Resolving it costs one extra lookup; pass `channelId` to skip that. |
| `channelId` | `string` | No | The channel’s `UC…` ID. Optional: supply it when you already have it — from a previous response, for instance — and it is used directly, skipping the handle lookup. |
| `projection_preset` | `string` | No | Defaults to `minimal`. Allowed values: `full`, `minimal`, `identity`, `engagement`, `content`. |
| `data_fields` | `string[]` | No | Adds top-level keys from `data` on top of the selected `projection_preset`. |

## Example

```json theme={null}
{
  "name": "youtube_get_channel",
  "arguments": {
    "channel": "@MrBeast",
    "projection_preset": "minimal",
    "data_fields": [
      "entityId",
      "name",
      "preferredUsername",
      "content"
    ]
  }
}
```

## Available data fields

* `@context`
* `type`
* `id`
* `url`
* `entityId`
* `preferredUsername`
* `name`
* `content`
* `followerCount`
* `videoCount`
* `isFamilySafe`
* `icon`
* `image`
* `tag`
* `availableIn`
* `attachment`

## Response notes

Successful calls return a JSON object with a top-level `data` field and, when
available, `metadata.creditsUsed` and `metadata.creditsRemaining`. See
[response format](/getting-started/response-format),
[pagination](/getting-started/pagination), and [credits](/getting-started/credits).
